Our work at CARECEN is grounded in the following principles:

  • Immigration is a human right and individuals have the right to migrate to secure the economic, social, and cultural wellbeing of their families.
  • Immigrants have the right to live in security regardless of their immigration status.
  • Immigrants have the right and the capacity to grow, learn, and develop in their new homeland.
  • Respect and honor for diverse cultures strengthens movement building and authentic, enduring unity.
  • Strong immigrant communities are built through education and civic engagement.

In The News

Voting rights for new citizens expanded A new law in California will allow people who become citizens after the voter registration deadline to register and vote up until the close of the polls on election day. Previously, new citizens could vote only if they registered at least seven days before elections.

A measure of justice The Obama administration announced that it will review the cases of some 300,000 immigrants facing deportation, allowing those who have no criminal records and do not pose a threat to national security to stay in this country and receive work permits. The government will seek deportation only for those convicted of serious crimes or facing serious criminal charges. Note that immigrants' whose cases are dismissed and who are issued a work permit will not be placed on a pathway to legal permanent residency.
